Consider Canva when you want to compose a presentation in a flexible design editor, or Beautiful.ai when you want guided slide layouts and an explicitly documented editable PowerPoint export. Before switching from Gamma, identify the exact editing requirement that its export fails to meet. Gamma itself exports PPTX, including editable tables; the mere need for a PowerPoint file is not a reason to replace it.
This guide is for consultants and marketing teams handing a deck to someone who will change its text, numbers and layout in PowerPoint. It compares two alternatives against that constraint, rather than reproducing the general Gamma review or its catalog alternatives page. The recommendations use official documentation and public prices checked October 30, 2026. We did not generate a deck, inspect an exported file or measure conversion fidelity.
For sales material, our approved-brief deck shortlist adds claim review, exact-text controls and a recipient edit policy to these export checks.
A file opening in PowerPoint is only the first requirement. A deck made of full-slide pictures can open successfully while leaving the recipient unable to correct a sentence or update a table cell.
Agree on the required deliverable first: editable text, separately selectable objects, editable table cells, usable notes and any required chart data. If the client requires a reusable corporate slide master, list that separately. Editing individual slides does not establish master-template compatibility.
Use the same proposed acceptance sample for each candidate: a title slide, a small data table and a diagram with a text label and two shapes. The recipient should change a heading, a number and an object position, then save and reopen the file. This is an evaluation brief, not a test we completed.
Gamma lists PPTX export on Free. Its export guide documents an Editable tables toggle, included speaker notes and embedded theme fonts. It also says exports do not include a PowerPoint slide master layout. Some effects can use fallback styles, and embedded-font support depends on the receiving application.
The Free-plan badge is determined by workspace status at export time. An active paid plan removes it from future exports; previously downloaded Free files keep it. Paying to remove branding is a different decision from changing authoring software.
Stay with Gamma if a representative export meets the recipient's editing needs. Compare alternatives when the source editing workflow, output behavior or required template structure is the real obstacle. We have no evidence that moving every deck to another tool improves conversion quality.
Canva is a candidate when a presentation belongs to a wider set of visual assets and a designer wants to arrange the slides directly. Its PowerPoint download lesson covers exporting a presentation through the share menu and choosing download options.
Start with a presentation design. Canva's file-type guide limits PPTX export to presentations, so a whiteboard or another design type should not be treated as the same route. It warns that downloaded files may look different in PowerPoint and may need edits or locally installed fonts. Animations and embedded videos are not supported as expected in that export.
Choose it when control over the source composition is valuable and you can review the receiving file. Do not assume every Canva graphic becomes a native PowerPoint chart or shape. Verify the objects that the client needs to maintain, especially labels inside diagrams and figures embedded in artwork.
Canva's download guidance also distinguishes a free design from one using premium assets. A Free user may need to license premium elements or upgrade before downloading without their watermark. For the first evaluation, use your own permitted assets and free elements so that asset licensing does not obscure the export question.
Main tradeoff: the design editor gives you a source composition to control, but the final PowerPoint still needs its own review. If a particular object arrives flattened, change the source or rebuild that object in PowerPoint before promising an editable handoff.
Beautiful.ai is worth considering when the author wants slide layouts that adapt to content, rather than arranging every element from a blank canvas. That authoring preference is distinct from the recipient's PowerPoint requirements.
Its export documentation makes a useful distinction: Editable PowerPoint exports are available on Pro, Team and Enterprise and are documented as preserving editable elements and presentation notes. PowerPoint Images exports instead place static slide pictures in a PowerPoint file.
For the whole deck, the documented route is Presentation → Export Presentation → Editable PowerPoint → Export. Use the exact editable option. The guide recommends installing the presentation's fonts to avoid formatting changes and says its transitions and animations are lost outside Beautiful.ai.
Choose it when guided composition fits the author's work and you can evaluate the editable route on the applicable plan. Do not treat the provider's editability statement as a test of your specific deck. A required chart-data workflow or corporate master still needs acceptance in PowerPoint.
Main tradeoff: there is a paid-plan requirement for the documented editable export. Avoid evaluating the image export and concluding that it represents the editable product.
No option wins merely because its file extension is PowerPoint. Match the receiving team's editing tasks and tolerance for corrections.
Public USD prices below were checked against official sources. Annual equivalents require annual billing. Taxes, regional prices and account-specific terms need confirmation before payment.
Canva's official plan comparison gives the US individual Pro prices. Price a team arrangement separately rather than assuming one individual license covers multiple authors.
The current Beautiful.ai pricing page shows Pro at $14.50 billed annually. An older official pricing-plans page still showed $12 when inspected; use the current navigation's pricing page and confirm checkout instead of budgeting from the older number. The 14-day Pro trial requires a credit card and converts to a paid subscription unless canceled. It is not an ongoing free plan. We did not activate it.
Gamma pricing lists 400 credits at signup on Free and 1,500 monthly credits on Plus. Its plan guide says Free credits do not refresh. Budget generation and revisions separately from the ability to download a file; an export allowance is not unlimited AI usage.
If the presentation teaches new users a product task, our onboarding-deck tool shortlist compares Gamma and Canva around approved notes, real screenshots and a maintainable teaching sequence.
Before producing the complete deck, ask the intended PowerPoint editor to open your representative export in the application they actually use. Have them change the agreed text, table cell and object position. If charts must remain data-editable, include that requirement in the sample. Check notes, links, overflow and fonts, then save and reopen.
Record the plan and export option alongside the result. Classify any correction as acceptable cleanup or a blocking defect. Do not replace editable objects with screenshots merely to make the file look right if editability is part of the contract.
For a strict corporate template, start by evaluating work in the approved PowerPoint template itself. Neither an editable-export label nor visual similarity proves compliance with its master layouts.
Open the Canva or Beautiful.ai card according to the authoring workflow you prefer. Keep Gamma if its representative export already passes. Commit to a subscription and full production only after the receiving editor can maintain the deliverable you agreed to provide.
