Verdict: Start with Clipdrop when you need to remove a background from a few product photos and want to see whether its free allowance is enough. Consider Photoroom when the images need the same framing, dimensions or background treatment across a catalog. Photoroom's batch tools are designed for that repeated workflow, while Clipdrop's public remover accepts up to ten files in one go. Neither product can be called the quality winner here: we did not submit the same merchant photos to both.
This comparison answers a narrower question than our Photoroom review for preparing a small catalog. That article examined Photoroom's setup and export workflow. Here we compare the two services' current web workflows, public limits and disclosed prices for removing or replacing a product-photo background.
Basis: Official product, help and pricing pages checked October 22, 2026. We did not create accounts, upload product images or test output quality. Prices reflect the Photoroom pricing selector's displayed USD region (Ukraine); Clipdrop's official Pro price was not displayed in its public pricing page during this check. The cover is an editorial illustration, not either product's interface.
| If your job is… | Start with… | Why | Check before you pay |
|---|
| One or a few isolated product photos | Clipdrop | Its remover accepts up to 10 files in one session and the public Free plan lists 20 background removals per 24 hours | The free output's permitted business use and available resolution; Pro's current amount was not shown publicly |
| A recurring set with consistent canvas, placement or background | Photoroom | Its Batch editor applies changes to multiple images and also allows individual edits | Batch exports count against your plan's export allowance; choose the size and billing period shown in your region |
| Generated product scenes | Photoroom, if you need its documented batch controls | AI Backgrounds can generate or apply backgrounds, while background removal itself is a separate core operation | Generative backgrounds use AI credits; do not confuse credits with exports |
| An exact product cutout with no invented details | Test either against the original | Both describe automatic background removal, but we have no comparative quality results | Zoom in on labels, transparent edges, handles and reflections before publishing |
For a single, authorized image, the fastest useful comparison is not a feature checklist. It is whether the output looks acceptable at the destination's crop and resolution without changing details that identify the item.
Clipdrop's Remove Background page supports image upload and says the tool accepts up to ten files at once. The product page lists product photos among its intended uses. That is a convenient place to start if you have a small, bounded set and do not need a broader catalog editor.
The official pricing page lists 20 background removals per 24 hours on Free. Its Pro column lists high-resolution background removal at up to 1,000 per 24 hours, plus other high-resolution tools. Those are published daily limits; they do not mean every user should process 1,000 items or that the free plan has no resolution restrictions.
The pricing page showed the Pro monthly price as “—” when checked, so we cannot make a reliable paid-cost comparison from that page. Check the price in Clipdrop's own upgrade flow before entering payment details. We also found no official statement on that page establishing business-use rights for every Free output. A seller should confirm the applicable terms rather than assume a free quota grants commercial usage.
Clipdrop also has a separate Replace Background tool. Treat background removal and replacement as different steps: a transparent cutout may suit a marketplace listing, while a replacement scene can introduce visual details that need review.
Photoroom's help page says its Batch feature can apply changes to multiple images, while still allowing individual edits. Batch is available across subscriptions, but exporting Batch results requires Pro, Max or Ultra. Photoroom's Background Remover guide says background removal itself does not use AI credits; saving an output does count toward the export limit.
That separation matters for a merchant. A simple removal and an AI-generated scene are not the same priced operation. Photoroom describes Background Remover as a core tool on paid plans, while AI Backgrounds draws from a credit allowance. Its help documentation also describes a Free Space as personal access that cannot be used commercially. Do not infer business-use permission from a visible free utility or an available Batch editor.
Batch is useful when you need the same background, size or positioning across a group, and the option to adjust individual images. It does not remove quality control: inspect each output for cut-off parts, changed shadows and details that could misrepresent the product.
The Photoroom selector identified its displayed pricing as USD for Ukraine. Monthly and annual options differ, and the yearly figure is a monthly equivalent with annual billing.
| Service and plan | Displayed price | Relevant allowance or condition |
|---|---|---|
| Clipdrop Free | $0 | Background removal: 20 per 24 hours; up to 10 files accepted in one upload session |
| Clipdrop Pro | Not shown on official pricing page | High-resolution background removal listed up to 1,000 per 24 hours; check the upgrade flow for the amount and billing terms |
| Photoroom Free Space | $0 | Personal use; official help says it is not for commercial use; feature and export allowances are limited |
| Photoroom Pro, monthly selection | $4.99/month | 1,000 exports/month; core background removal included on paid plans, subject to fair-use limits |
| Photoroom Pro, yearly selection | $2.99/month equivalent, billed yearly | 1,000 exports/month; displayed annual commitment is not a monthly subscription |
| Photoroom Max, monthly / yearly selection | $12.50/month / $6.99/month equivalent, billed yearly | 3,000 exports/month; Shopify integration included on Max and Ultra, not Pro |
Photoroom's page showed 3,000 AI credits on the regional Pro card, while its comparison section listed 8,000/month; Max showed 7,000 on the card and 25,000/month in the comparison. We could not reconcile those figures on the public page, and neither is the background-removal allowance. Check the credits and export count actually offered to your Space before buying. The ordinary removal tool is listed as a core tool; AI Backgrounds and other generative work use credits.
Clipdrop's public page did not expose a Pro price in this check. It would be misleading to rank the two paid plans by price while one price is missing. For a one-off job, first confirm whether Clipdrop Free meets your use and resolution needs. For recurring commercial catalog work, confirm Photoroom's business-use terms, export quota and regional billing total.
Use only product photos you are allowed to process. Before comparing subscriptions, make a checklist from the destination where the image will appear:
| Check | What to inspect in each export | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product fidelity | Label text, color, shape, accessories and material | A clean image must still depict the item accurately |
| Cutout edge | Fine mesh, glass, hair-like fibers, handles and gaps | Halos or missing edges are easy to miss at thumbnail size |
| Canvas | Aspect ratio, crop, padding and pixel dimensions | A marketplace may require a specific square or landscape frame |
| Background | Transparency, plain white or approved replacement scene | Different channels may reject or display these differently |
| Download | File type, resolution, naming and transparency after download | The editor preview is not the delivered asset |
If a product has a reflective or transparent surface, include one example in the evaluation. If the workflow will repeat, try the same framing rule on items with different silhouettes. Record the result and remaining manual fixes; do not generalize from one easy object.
Choose Clipdrop first for occasional background removal when its Free daily allowance, terms and output resolution suit your job. Its public page gives you a clear 20-per-24-hour Free limit and a Pro throughput figure, but not the Pro price. Confirm that amount before considering a paid upgrade.
Choose Photoroom when the task includes organizing and editing a batch, keeping a consistent canvas, or revising individual images within the same set. Budget exports separately from AI credits, and do not use the Free Space for commercial product work under the published plan guidance.
If both seem suitable, evaluate the same three representative images and compare the downloaded files at their final display size. Keep the original beside each export. The best choice is the one that meets your product-fidelity, format and usage requirements at a cost you can verify.
Start by reviewing the Photoroom listing or Clipdrop listing, then test a small authorized image set before committing a full catalog.
